CNC milling aluminium
CNC machining of aluminium is done by numerous factories across the world. This is precisely why Landes does it better than the rest. There are few places where aluminium milling of complex shapes is carried out like we do at Landes, to an accuracy of just a few micrometres. We call this level of CNC machining ‘high-end machining’.
Accurate CNC milling
Aluminium is a relatively easy to machine material, for both milling and turning. But is also bends easily – in particular when it gets warmer, for example, during the process. This tendency of aluminium to distort demands a special approach whenever you need to work to tight tolerances. After all, we want to avoid the aluminium vibrating or distorting. This is a particular risk in the case of thin walls.
During CNC milling we ensure the stability of the component at all times by choosing the right sequence of production steps for each stage of the process.
For monitoring the dimensions, we have invested in temperature controlled measurement facilities, to we prevent deviations in dimensions due to expansion or contraction.
More about aluminium
You may never have thought about it, but aluminium has only been in wide-spread use for around a century. Although aluminium isn’t such a rare metal, it just took a long time before we developed the techniques to isolate the aluminium compounds which occur in nature.
Aluminium is relatively soft. However, alloys with small amounts of copper, magnesium, manganese and silicon are almost as strong as iron. And yet aluminium is around 70% lighter. It is therefore not surprising that there is a high demand from the aerospace industry for companies with expertise in CNC machining aluminium components in accordance with AS 9100. Landes is, of course, fully certified and meets this demanding quality standard required by this industry.
